Unusual Writing
Lou Stallman has a very unorthodox writing style he always writes against the market. His first hit song "Treasure of Love" was written in 1956. Every publisher
that he went to and played the song, told him it was not 32 measures
long. That was the rule, songs had to Have 32 measures of music. "Treasure
of Love" only had 24 measures and went to #
2 in the country. ( Held out of the #1 spot by Elvis Presley's Heart
Break Hotel ) On top of that it was written on a guitar. His second hit
"Round and Round" by Perry Como had 64 measures.
"Don't
Pity Me" by Dion & the Belmonts was
a hit record when Dick Clark asked Lou to write a similar "hit"
for Frankie Avalon. "A Boy Without a Girl" was the result
and with producer Pete D'Angeles insight Lou played Guitar on the
record.
The
British Invasion
In 1963 when the British Invasion occurred, Lou said Recording artists are not going to want songwriters songs. Groups are going to write their own songs. So LOU went in the direction of MOTOWN. He wrote this Iyric When you're alone and in a corner, You're only mourner is the face that appears in the nearest mirror. That Iyric became the first line in Lou Stallman's hit "Everybody's Got The Right To Love" by The Supremes. One of his friends asked him "How the hell did you get a MOTOWN record? I'd give my left ~ you know what ~ to get a song recorded on MOTOWN. Lou's answer was "I wrote a Hit song."
